Kia ora, we're Robin + Andie, a wedding photography and film studio who love shooting at Terrace Downs, out near the Rakaia Gorge.

Now trading as Fable Terrace Downs Resort, it sits in the Canterbury high country with the hills on every side. It's about an hour from Christchurch and feels considerably further, which is rather the point.

Shooting at Terrace Downs

Scale is what you're getting here. Rolling hills, open sky and mountains behind, so portraits have a backdrop most venues would have to drive an hour to reach. You just walk outside.

High country light is the other thing. It's cleaner up there and it changes fast, particularly late in the day when the hills start catching colour. Worth building a few minutes into your day for, because it's the difference between a nice photograph and one you'll actually hang.

And the seasons genuinely change the place. Tussock gold in autumn, snow on the tops in winter, deep green in spring. A summer wedding and a winter one look like different venues, which is worth knowing if you've seen photos from one and are booking the other.
