Suyash got in touch with us in advance of his trip to Christchurch to ask if we might be interested in capturing a surprise proposal to his partner while they were on holiday in New Zealand. Of course we said YES!

Suyash was really keen to propose to Neha in Christchurch, as that would be the last night of their South Island trip before making the journey home to the USA. As Canterbury based photographers we know a few cool spots up in the Port Hills with epic views and were able to make some location suggestions. We also scouted to check the evening light in advance of the shoot, as this had to be perfect! We plotted together with Suyash via email that he would take Neha out to a lovely restaurant for dinner in Christchurch before proposing (which would ensure she wore her favourite clothes and makeup for the occasion) and then drive her up to Sign of the Bellbird for sunset.

We didn't look suspicious at all with our cameras while waiting for our couple to turn up, as this is a popular lookout spot and we were channelling ‘visiting tourist vibes’ while snapping the harbour view. We were prepared to hide in a bush if needs be! Then Suyash text to say they were running a bit late as Neha was enjoying herself at the restaurant (read ordered another drink) and we saw all levels of sunlight and rain come and go. When he finally made it to the proposal location there wasn’t a sunset, BUT the rain had stopped and there was lots of gorgeous low lying cloud. Perfection!

As Suyash dropped to one knee and pulled out a ring box we got the shot! The best thing? SHE SAID YES! Suyash waved us down to join them on the lawn and Neha couldn’t believe the whole thing had been photographed without her knowing. She was delighted and they were both SO happy. We gave them a bottle of New Zealand sparkling wine to celebrate and spray before spending some time with them doing a few couple portraits to share with their friends and family in the States. What a great way to announce your engagement!

We’d say YES too if someone gave us this 3.5 carat diamond! What a beauty.
